Tile maps built out of scraped, attributed pixel art. A pack descriptor says what is on each sheet, where every drawing begins and ends, and why that boundary is where it is. A map says what should be on each square. The renderer turns the second into pixels using the first, and makes no decisions of its own.

Written

These start as a paragraph saying what the place should look like, become a charmap, and only then become tiles. Each page carries the paragraph above the picture, because holding those two together is the only check that catches a map that is perfectly valid and is of nowhere.

coldgap
coldgap
30 × 40 squares · 49 objects
Coldgap is the place where the road north stops being a road. Two shoulders of rock close in from east and west until there is room for one cart between them and no more.
harrowgate
harrowgate
40 × 30 squares · 70 objects
Harrowgate is a crossroads town that people left without packing. You come in from the north, off the station road, and the first thing you see is the square: bare earth worn through the grass, wide enough that the emptiness is the point.
lychfield
lychfield
30 × 40 squares · 62 objects
Lychfield is where the town on the plain buries its dead: one long lane climbing from the south, and up the slope more graves than the town has houses. The lane is the only worn ground there is.
oxlease
oxlease
40 × 30 squares · 50 objects
Oxlease is one farm and the ground it works. The lane comes in from the east and ends in a yard of bare earth, and everything the farm owns stands round that yard: the house on the north side, the big thatched barn at the west end, the bread oven beside the house and the well in the middle where it is the same walk from either door.
pearmain
pearmain
40 × 30 squares · 165 objects
The orchard at Pearmain is older than the lane that goes past it. A stone wall runs right round it - battlemented, which is more wall than apples need - with one gateway in the south side where a track turns in off the lane.
pennyrow
pennyrow
44 × 24 squares · 65 objects
Pennyrow is one street and it is all selling. It runs east to west, wide enough for two carts to pass, and the shops stand along its north side shoulder to shoulder with their fronts on the roadway: the teal one with the bowl on its sign, the long green one with the lanterns, ordinary houses between them that have put a banner out and become shops for the day.
skerrow
skerrow
40 × 30 squares · 48 objects
Skerrow is five roofs and a beach. The road comes down out of the grass from the north and simply stops where the sand starts, because past that point everybody walks where they like.
tarnside
tarnside
40 × 30 squares · 66 objects
Somebody has been camped at the tarn for a while. It is a small round water in a clearing the pines have left round it.
toadcross
toadcross
40 × 30 squares · 59 objects
Two roads cross on the high ground, and in winter that is all there is to say about the place. They have been kept open: you can see the earth, and a rim of thawed grass down each side of it where the wheels throw the slush, and everything else is under snow.
toadmoss
toadmoss
30 × 40 squares · 125 objects
Nobody keeps the shrine at Toadmoss and the wood has almost finished taking it back. A narrow path comes up from the south between trees that stand close on both sides, passes under a red gate that is somehow still standing, then under a second one, and opens into a small court of bare earth.
wherry
wherry
40 × 30 squares · 62 objects
At Wherry the road comes down to the river from the south and goes on again from the far bank, and there is nothing between the two ends of it but water. On the near side the ferryman's house stands by the landing with its door on the road; one boat is tied at the landing and a second is out in midstream.

Grown from a seed

The other direction: terrain, a settlement and roads out of noise. Good for filling the space between the places somebody meant, and for stress-testing a pack — a generator will try every object against every other one far faster than a person laying them out by hand.
